Green Chemistry in Higher Education: State of the art, challenges and future trends

ChemSusChem, 2018

Aleksandra Kurowska-Susdorf

Nowadays, there is an increasing interest on world sustainability in our societies and, because of that, university students would like to know how human actions affect the health status of our planet. This is mainly due to their basic knowledge of such problems as global warming and greenhouse gases. Students would like to gain the knowledge how to safeguard the Earth for future generations. This must involve changes in education programs at interested institutions and universities. To ensure that the future chemist generation is equipped with the proper knowledge, significant efforts would be needed. Thus, this article aims to present the history of green chemistry and its milestones and also to give ideas how to teach this subject. Discussion on awareness in the field of green chemistry as well as on existing materials for teaching is presented. In addition, green chemistry metrics, which should be known and used by professors and students, are described. Teaching methods of gree...

Green Chemistry Education Subjects: Education Studies

Scholarly Community Encyclopedia, 2020

An important goal for sustainability education is to learn negotiation, problem solving and decision-making skills through discussions about ecological, social, economic, and ethical principles concerning local and global responsibility in their own life. Through memorable, experiential, and active processes, students learn to discuss their own value selection and to evaluate phenomena and sources of information critically. In this article, we aim to identify suitable pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning green chemistry among college students and preservice teachers by examining the teaching methods that have been used to promote green chemistry education (GCE) and how these methods havesupported green chemistry learning (GCL).

What Lies Behind Teaching and Learning Green Chemistry to Promote Sustainability Education? A Literature Review.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2020

Eila Jeronen

In this qualitative study, we aim to identify suitable pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning green chemistry among college students and preservice teachers by examining the teaching methods that have been used to promote green chemistry education (GCE) and how these methods have supported green chemistry learning (GCL). We found 45 articles published in peerreviewed scientific journals since 2000 that specifically described teaching methods for GCE. Thecontent of the articles was analyzed based on the categories of the teaching methods used and the revised version of Bloom’s taxonomy. Among the selected articles, collaborative and interdisciplinary learning, and problem-based learning were utilized in 38 and 35 articles, respectively. These were the most frequently used teaching methods, alongside a general combination of multiple teaching methods and teacher presentations. Developing collaborative and interdisciplinary learning skills, techniques for increasing environmental awareness, problemcentered learning skills, and systems thinking skills featuring the teaching methods were seen to promote GCL in 44, 40, 34, and 29 articles, respectively. The results showed that the integration ofgreen chemistry teaching (GCT), e.g., with sustainable education, promoted GCL by fostering environmental consciousness and behavioral change and cognitive processes in a sustainable direction.

Exploring Student Attitudes and Perceptions of Green Chemistry and its Practical Applications

Isara solutions, 2020

International Res Jour Managt Socio Human

Green chemistry plays a vital role in minimizing the hazards associated with chemical preparation, reactions, and products in daily life. Therefore, it becomes essential to understand students' attitudes towards green chemistry and its practical application, particularly among chemistry students. This study aims to examine students' perceptions and opinions regarding green chemistry and its relevance in everyday life. A total of 200 respondents participated in the study by completing questionnaires that assessed their opinions on green chemistry principles and their application. The results revealed that a majority of students expressed agreement with the application of green chemistry principles. However, it was observed that some respondents still held the belief that certain principles were either impractical or unnecessary in chemistry experiments and everyday life. These findings suggest that educators should emphasize specific aspects when introducing the application of green chemistry principles in teaching and learning activities. By addressing students' concerns and misconceptions, educators can effectively promote the adoption of green chemistry practices among future chemists and individuals in their daily lives.
