Job Description Summary
During the Academic Year, Veterans Upward Bound Instructors areresponsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging,empowering Academic Year & Summer Component courses. Thecoursework and classroom environment should encourage and rewardreflection, revision, and improvement in the academic courses beingtaught.
Hours vary based on course schedule and component. Courses offeredor assigned may be 90 to 120 minutes in length and meet between5:30pm – 9:30pm during the evening Monday -Friday.
Positions available for Largo, MD campus with some hybrid options,depending on programming needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required in subject areas: English,Mathematics, Science, Computer Technology.
- Strong academic focus in one or more of the following subjectareas: English I-IV; Math-Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry,Pre-Calculus/Calculus; Science- Biology, Chemistry, Physics;Foreign Language- Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian; Technology orCareers.
- Previous experience designing academic curriculum (secondarycurriculum preferred) or corporate professional developmentcomponents.
- One year full-time or equivalent part-time experience inproviding direct services in a secondary educational or socialservice environment working with at-risk students (teaching ortutoring), or one year full-time or equivalent part-time experiencein providing corporate training.
- Experience and knowledge regarding computer programs such asword processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, andinstructional technology.

- Extent of teaching/training experience
- Extent of experience designing curriculum in academic subjectsand/or cultural diversity
- Extent of previous TRIO experience.
- Extent of experience working with diverse groups ofindividuals.
- Extent of experience and knowledge regarding computer programssuch as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software andinstructional technology.
- Extent of demonstrated ability to communicate effectively withstudents, faculty, staff and community members in person, on thetelephone and in writing.
Job Requirements
- Must be able to work a part-time flexible schedule not toexceed 5 hours per week, depending on program needs during theacademic year. Evenings instructor hours are between 5:30pm –9:30pm Monday thru Friday.
- Must be able to commit to working a set schedule forapproximately two 8 weeks per semester and for two 3 weeks per thesummer component.
- Certification or provisional certification to teach in subjectarea or currently teaching/advising at the secondary/college level,or corporate training experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and writtenstandard English.
- As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to presentacceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are aU.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
